Is it safe? Is it expensive?: Crime is low; roads are honest about being a young country. Day tours from $35, decent rooms from $40, dive trips from $90 — far better value than Bali for the same dollars.
When should I visit?: May to November is the dry season — best for Mt Ramelau, beaches, and dive visibility. Whales pass through October to December. Avoid January-February rain if you can.
Do I need a visa?: Most travelers get a 30-day visa-on-arrival at Dili airport for $30 cash. Passport valid 6+ months, plus proof of onward travel. Book your tours first — visas are easy.
How do I get there?: Direct flights from Bali (90 minutes), Singapore, and Darwin. The Bali hop is the most popular route — a perfect side trip from Indonesia.
